carbohydrate is an organic compound with the general formula Cn(H2O)n, that is, consists only of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, with the last two in the 2:1 atom ratio.
Classification of Carbohydrates,


  • Monosaccharides. = it is a simple suger with multiple OH group.Based on number of carbon (3,4,5,6) a monosaccharide is a triose,tetrose.pentose and hexose,

  • Disaccharides. = 2 monosaccharide covalently linked,

  • Oligosaccharides. = Few monosaccharides covalently linked,

  • polysaccharides. = Consists of chain of monosaccharides or disaccharides with covalently linked,
